Are You Using The Right Mental Zoom Lens?
To change the way you feel about certain situations in life, you need to adjust your mental zoom.
Certain situations require you to increase your zoom. This will allow you to become fully immersed into the activity.
There are situations when you need to zoom out and taker a wider look at things in order to have a better perspective on them.
This is a very practical solution to changing the way you feel. If you feel bored, angry or just upset you can use this very simple technique to change the way you feel very quickly.
Lets look at some very simple examples.
Zooming in
A perfect example is walking or any other mundane tasks (although strictly speaking no tasks are mundane, they are what you make them). When walking you ideally want to zoom in. You want to be fully immersed in the activity.
You even want to zoom in to a microscopic level. Feel what’s going on around you, the blood pumping around your body carrying all the nutrients. Think about the amazing processes your brain is conducting to send a signal to your leg to make it move. Go into intense detail.
Start by looking at yourself from above and then zoom in to the atomic level. There are an infinite number of situations to which this can be applied. You can do it whilst doing those tasks you do not particularly enjoy to eliminate boredom.
Zooming out
You got angry because someone said your butt looks big in those jeans. This is the ideal time to zoom out. Imagine you were on the moon and you were looking at earth through a lens. Right now you’re fully zoomed in but in order to relieve some of that anger, zoom out to about 100ft. Then go further, go to 1000ft.
Look at everything else going on and ask yourself a very simple question: In the grand scheme of things, what does it really matter?
It’s easy to get caught up in the mundane and let small things influence and change the way we feel. It’s even simpler to improve the situation by changing your zoom.
beautiful article! spot on 🙂
xx
Interesting article Amit, it is very interesting how just looking at something in a different way changes how we feel about it.
Thanks for the reminder, it is something simple that we can sometimes forget.

I haven’t come across this way of looking at it before, I will give it a go.

Hey Ben,
Thanks for the kind words and nice to hear it does make a difference for people. If you do find yourself experimenting this over the next few weeks would love to hear your feedback on the subject. 🙂
