Red Flags in Dating: Unmissable signs to watch out for.

Red Flags - Red Flag

Dating is supposed to be fun, right? That intoxicating mix of excitement, anticipation, and butterflies in the stomach. That is, until the red flags start waving like an overenthusiastic football fan at a match.

Now, I’ve been there. I’ve seen it all. I’ve sat across the table from a date who subtly (but definitely) interviewed me like I was applying for the role of “Future Spouse, Immediate Start.” And let’s not forget the time a client of mine when on a date, the other person referred to their ex by name 27 times in one dinner. (They counted ? )

So, to save you from similar awkward encounters, let’s break down some red-flag warning signs that should have you questioning whether this date is a love story or a future therapy session in the making.

1: They Treat the Waiter Like Dirt

Oh, this one is my personal litmus test. Pay attention to how they treat people who aren’t trying to impress them. If they snap at the waiter, roll their eyes at the barista, or act like the world owes them VIP treatment… guess what? That attitude will be coming your way soon enough.

Kindness isn’t selective. It’s a habit. And if they’re rude to people who can’t do anything for them, run for the hills before they start treating you the same.

2: Their Ex Is the Main Character in Your Date – (Red Flags 10x)

Let’s get something straight: mentioning an ex once? Normal. But when your date keeps steering the conversation back to “what they used to do,” or “how much better/worse they were,” you’re now a third wheel on this date.

From a client of mine: ‘I once had a date who spent the entire evening comparing me to her ex.’ The entire evening. “Oh, he also had a beard like yours! He used to order this exact same drink! You both love movies – oh my god, you’re just like him!” ???

Listen, you are not auditioning to be a “better version” of their past relationship. You deserve to be liked for you, not for how you stack up against someone else.

3: They Have ZERO Close Friends

Now, I’m not saying everyone has to be a social butterfly. But if someone has no close friends—like, not a single one—it’s worth asking why.

Friendships are a reflection of how we maintain relationships in general. If they can’t hold onto long-term friendships, what are the chances they’ll be great at maintaining a relationship with you?

4: They Play the “Victim” in Every Story

We all have struggles. Life happens. But if every single story they tell involves them being the innocent victim and everyone else being the villain, be careful.

The boss was always toxic. The ex was always crazy. Their friends always betrayed them. You see the pattern? The common denominator in all these stories is them.

Accountability is attractive. A total lack of it? ?

5: Love Bombing Red Flags – The Fireworks Show That Ends in Flames

This one is sneaky. At first, it feels incredible. They shower you with attention, texts, gifts, and over-the-top declarations of love in the first two weeks.

But here’s the thing: real love takes time. If someone is “all in” too soon, it’s not love—it’s a red flag in disguise.

I once had someone tell me, “I can’t believe I’ve finally found the one” on date two. TWO. I should’ve been flattered, but honestly? My gut was screaming. And sure enough, when I didn’t match their intensity right away, they vanished like a magician at the end of a trick.

Lesson learned: pace matters. Healthy relationships grow; they don’t explode overnight.

6: They Dismiss Your Boundaries

If someone gets annoyed when you say no or tries to guilt you into things you’re not comfortable with—???.

Boundaries aren’t up for debate. If you say, “Hey, I don’t like texting 24/7,” and they guilt-trip you about why you’re not obsessed with them yet, take that as your cue to exit.

Respect is non-negotiable.

7: You Feel Drained Instead of Energized

This one isn’t always obvious, but how do you feel after you hang out with them?

Do you feel lighter, happier, and excited to see them again? Or do you feel emotionally drained, second-guessing yourself, or like you need a long nap?

Relationships should be energizing, not exhausting. If being around them feels like a full-time emotional labor job, that’s a huge red flag.

8: The “Jokes” That Aren’t Jokes

Sarcasm and playful teasing? Fun.

Constant “jokes” at your expense? Not fun.

If someone constantly makes “harmless” digs at you, only to say, “Relax, I’m just joking,” that’s not humor. That’s a lack of respect with a side of gaslighting. A partner should build you up, not chip away at your confidence one ‘joke’ at a time.

? So you see these red flags, what now?

If you spot one of these red flags, it doesn’t mean you need to run for the door immediately, but you should pay attention.

If you spot multiple? Consider this your cosmic sign to save yourself a headache and bounce.

Dating is meant to be exciting, fulfilling, and fun. You’re not just looking for someone to date, you’re looking for someone who adds to your life, not takes away from it.

Trust your gut. If it’s sending you “???” vibes, listen to it.

And hey, if you ever need a second opinion, book in a free 30m coaching call. I’ve seen it all, I’ll be honest with you. ?
